This informational forum will create dialogue on topics such as: designing Trusts based on traditional concepts; Supreme Court rulings, how wealth can work collectively and collaboratively benefiting Indigenous economies, as well as different types of trusts including federal, provincial, compensation and others. All First Nations, Metis, Inuit and any interested members of the general public are invited to come examine the various types of ‘Indian Trusts’ in Canada. Distinguished and learned speakers including Elders, visionaries and other professionals will be sharing their wisdom and experience concerning ‘Indian Trust Funds’. This conference is the fourth in an ongoing series studying models for Indigenous self-reliance, through a forum established by NICE called The Creation of Wealth. This is a timely and exciting opportunity to gain greater capacity, understand and contribute to Indigenous people’s advancement in determining sustainable self-reliance for future generations. The first in a series of forums was June 2013 held in Winnipeg, MB where the concept was shared with over 100 participants from across Canada. The result of this gathering was 18 models of self-sufficiency, showing how communities working together can create wealth. The first Creation of Wealth initiative focused on indigenous gaming and a working group was established at the second Creation of Wealth forum October 2013 held at the Dunes Casino in White Cap First Nation, Saskatchewan. This gaming working group met again in January 2014, in another open forum attracting more indigenous gaming bodies. Together a drafted constitution was amended, ratified and the Indigenous People’s Gaming Confederacy was launched with an interim board representing 13 First Nations and an open membership. The National Indigenous Council of Elders (NICE) continues working on other Indigenous capacity building initiatives, the newest is to address the issue of Indian Trust Funds. Billions of dollars are in these various trust funds, held for first nations where little is publicly known about them. The forum coming March 31 – April 2, 2014 at River Cree Resort in Enoch, Alberta will provide opportunity to learn about the Trust Funds. Examples of the 18 models developed to creating wealth and self-sufficiency include: collective use of resources, creation of urban reserves, monetizing current assets, development of tourism and destination entertainment. The forums capitalize on sharing of one another’s wisdom and triumphs and helping to build capacity for all Indigenous people in Canada to secure self-sufficiency. https://facebook/events/279044175579488/?source=1
