The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department just chose this place - TopicsExpress

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department just chose this place as the states best new building. At the risk of sounding like an old curmudgeon, what the hell does presenting an award for best new building have to do with the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department? Why dont they issue an award for best new park? Or better yet, why dont they skip the awards and just focus on the mission that the legislature gave them decades ago? And what are the criteria for making the choice? After all, how can this building qualify as the best for parks, when Hillsboro and Metro doled out taxpayer dollars and waived system development charges to convince the developer to build the building? Part of the charges they waived included system development charges to build parks! And as an added bonus, the developer is applying for 10 more years of property tax reductions, so the new residents wont be paying for parks that theyll be using. So lets see - Hillsboro and Metro are waiving the usual developer fees (that every other developer/property owner pays), including the portion of the fees dedicated to building new parks, and the developer is applying for a decade worth of property tax reductions that would be used in part to pay for new parks. Sounds like parks (and schools, and police, and fire, and every other public service), along with every developer/property owner that plays by the rules, are getting screwed by this deal. Yet, for some unknown reason, the state parks department gives this thing an award? Whos in charge down there? oregonlive/hillsboro/index.ssf/2014/10/hillsboros_4th_main_developmen.html
