The “Sporting Snippets Hall of Fame” There can’t be many on the local football scene who have made a significant impact on the game as a player, a manager and a referee, but certainly Greyabbey’s TREVOR McKAY has done exactly that. As a player Trevor can point to a NI Youth International cap in 1971 and a wide string of different successes in his time as a goal-keeper. He is in the very rare ‘Club’ for locally-born players to have an Intermediate Cup winning medal (with RUC in the season 1986 - 1987) and a B Division Championship memento from the same campaign. His playing days certainly produced many successes and his achievements at that stage of his remarkable career are consistent with the dedication, commitment and aspiration which he always paraded. When he moved his deliberations to refereeing, his capability and efficiency continued to be clearly evident and, in Down Area circles, he was in charge of the Billy Allen Final (1999-2000) and the Sittlington Decider of 1997. His competence as a match official also landed him acknowledgement on a wider plane, and he was an assistant official at the 2001Junior Shield Final as well as carrying the flag in Irish League games at Castlereagh Park, Solitude and Clandeboye Park. Management was his third area of involvement and, in that role with Rosemount Rec., he maintained a celebrated and eminent position on centre stage. During that period, the teams in his control collected four Billy Allen Shields, two Sittlington Cups and a Premier League Championship. That remarkable haul of Trophies included the rare and exultant feat of capturing a Down Area Treble. Trevor, as Club Treasurer, continues to pursue a very active and weighty involvement within the Rosemount Club and maintains a very central station on the local soccer stage. Trevor McKay commands a position of great stature in the local footballing game, and his inclusion in the “Sporting Snippets Hall of Fame” is both rightly-due and highly-appropriate.
