The Truth About Police Officers Today While picking up my son - TopicsExpress

The Truth About Police Officers Today While picking up my son from school I briefly met a young officer from the Parker Police Department (Colorado) who, when he found out I retired from the Aurora Police Department, immediately shook my hand and thanked me for having served. The sense of pride that hit me was indescribable. Why? We normally thank the men and women in the military for their services and rightfully so, they protect our country and sacrifice they lives to give us the freedom we have today and I too thank them and pray for all of them. Rarely are police officers thanked. Maybe because the only time we really hear about officers is when something went wrong. Yes, just like the military, when something goes wrong it’s all over the news and whether you agree or disagree it’s usually a very small percentage of what’s going on in the rest of the day-to-day world. The percentage of things going wrong in Corporate America, and Professional Workers are probably more prevalent. However, police officers are in the public eyes and are held to a higher standard. And maybe it SHOULD be that way, but they are human and mistakes are made. That isn’t cliché and it isn’t an excuse, just an argument for understanding the reality of what is. As a nation we are so quick to judge instead of letting the system figure out if the “something that went wrong” was justified or not. Every suspect in this county is entitled to due process, so to should police officers. But that’s not what I’m writing about today… I think this country needs to hear about the men and women who protect their communities and yes put their lives on the line every day to make sure that you and your families have a safe place to enjoy life with your family and friends. You’ll never hear about the day to day heroes who live next door to you. Even if I asked officers from across the country to write one thing that they did to show this country there unselfish dedication to their communities they probably won’t. Why? Because they probably would tell you that it is their job and honor to serve you and your family. What’s sad is you will rarely hear about the heroes behind the stories: • The officer who has put in countless hours of raising awareness and money for people who have cancer. • Police Officers who have given money, food, and shelter to help the people who are truly in need. • The SWAT teams that have rescued countless hostages and who have saved lives of the suspect who have taken a hostage, or barricaded themselves because they were wanted or wanted to committed suicide. • Officers who are in schools do more than provide a safe haven, they teach, they talk to your children, and their part of your child’s life and in some cases have helped them take the right road. • Officers and Departments that spend hundreds of hours determining crime patterns and execute their plans to apprehend the suspect(s) before you can be the next victim. • Having an officer crying after a case involving a father who executed his wife and twin sons. Not because of the discovery of the bodies. Because the officer lied to one of the twin boys when he asked if his brother was going to be OK and the officer replied yes, knowing that is brother was next to him dead. Why, the officer did want to lose this boy too. • Or the SWAT team responding to a hostage situation and decided after hours of negotiations decided to enter the front door knowing possibly that one or some of them would be shot or killed. Why, after the suspect who held his girlfriend and son hostage and threaten to kill them started shooting inside. Other SWAT officers used explosives to remove a partial wall and removed the child safely while the entry team entered and took on gun fire from the suspect, Yes, that night SWAT recused two victims. • Yes, and dress as Santa Clause to give children in need something for Christmas that wouldn’t normally have a present. The stories like this aren’t every now and then, it’s every day and hundreds of these stories throughout the country are happening daily, but you’ll probably never hear about them. Why, because it’s their job, it’s their honor to serve. Thank you for serving our communities and this great country of ours.
