The United States is concerned about the safety and the rule of law in Haiti Ambassador of the United States to the UN, Samantha Power, speaking at a meeting special one Security Council on Haitis case has raised concerns in regard to the strengthening of public security and the rule of law. While welcoming the progress made in strengthening the role of the Haitian Police Ms. Power has called for an increase in the size of the Haitian police. American diplomat stressed that it was necessary that patrols the United Nations Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (MINUSTAH) are conducted in partnership with the Haitian police, and that it can gradually lead patrols independently. Meanwhile the representative of the United States at the UN called on Haitian authorities to promote the rule of law, including by improving the judicial and penitentiary sectors. The reduction of the duration of the detention is in this context an indicator of the improvement of the judicial system, suggested Ms. Power inviting Haitis partners to focus their efforts on strengthening the judicial sector. With respect to elections Ms. Power recommended that the Haitian political leaders and civil society to reach an agreement on the electoral process, to ensure that the elections planned for this year are transparent and free. Moreover, the representative of the United States looked forward assessment of MINUSTAH, announced by the Secretary General in his report, hoping that this is done in consideration of the development of the country.
