The civil war in the migrants rights movement about whether or not to accept the current immigration reform proposals is an important addendum to the state of the US economy. Those of us who are critical of whats coming down the pike arent simply whining. We are simply issuing a warning and refuse to contribute to the narrative of The American Dream. The economic facts are stark. The American Dream isnt even working for US citizens. Undocumented workers are the release valve for a trickle down economic philosophy that has concentrated wealth at the top at the expense of the middle class (and of course, the working poor have been invisible in our national discourse) . We need to create a narrative of solidarity between undocumented workers and US citizen workers. Our futures are tied. I say this with great respect for my undocumented friends fighting to get reform in DC: I understand what it means to want relief at any cost.
