The difference between Americas obsession with guns and Americas - TopicsExpress

The difference between Americas obsession with guns and Americas obsessive fear against drunk driving, is that people in all areas of the country could freak out equally on drunk driving, (we must save the children!), but any nationwide approach towards guns will need to consider the differences between how guns are viewed, used and abused in the city and the country. Moms demanding action on the Brooklyn Bridge are in another world from rural America, and vice versa. In the cities, people rely on guns for protection from crime. They do not trust the police, and they do not trust their neighbors. In the country, guns are used as an every day tool for hunting and against predators. Although they are used occassionally for protection, the great harm seen in the country is not their neighbors, but rather outsiders. As a result, a wacky redneck ideology holds that by being armed to the teeth, people are somehow upholding their Constitutional rights. Although the threat of guns to societys health is significant. Gun accidents through casual use are quite common in the country, and kids are getting hurt and killed unnecessarily. Statistically speaking, guns are more dangerous to the public health in the country than in the city! Moms marching in New York City mean well for sure, but until guns can be seen as a significant threat to our health (and not ideologically), and until any restrictions or regulations on guns can reflect the way they are used and abused in different areas of the country, the NRA will have little trouble with its divide and conquer strategy, and the killings will continue. And out in the country, away from the Brooklyn Bridge, the only thing that pisses off Elmer Fudd & Yosemite Sam more than an irrational fear of a black President taking their guns, is a bunch of liberal women in New York City trying to do the same! Sorry for the long post, but emotional appeals are not going to impact any intelligent action regarding guns. This will need to be dealt with from a public health perspective.
