The famous beatitudes our Lord gave on the Mount of Beatitudes in Northern Galilee over looking the sea (river) of Galilee is simple in content but profound in its beneficial realities and diverse applications. These Beatitudes should denote the redeemed, moral qualities and godly attitudes the born-again believer in Yeshua is to live, think, and pray for when living the Kingdom life. In the Beatitudes, Jesus of Nazareth describes the character of the people of the kingdom. The Beatitudes are the promises Messiah Jesus will keep to those sons and daughters of His Kingdom who are in a state for hungering more for God’s righteousness—they will be filled and satisfied, who mourn over their own sins and the sins of others—they shall be comforted, who walk with self control and humility before God (being meek) —in the coming Kingdom of Messiah, they will inherit the earth, who show mercy and forgiveness towards others who have injured them—they shall have mercy from God. They seek to be pure and holy in heart and mind so they may see God in the beauty of holiness. They walk in the peace of Messiah the Prince of Peace and want to see others receive this unshakable peace through faith in Him—they are called the children of God. They will joyfully endure persecution and slander from a world-system that hates God and His Christ knowing full well heaven is their glorious end for this, as it was for the Old Testaments prophets persecuted before them. The citizen of God’s kingdom is a person of continual prayer and will include the indispensable elements the Lord mentions in the model prayer He lays out in what has been called “the Lord’s Prayer” given in Matthew 6:9-13. The Father is acknowledged in heaven to be holy and we ask Him to speedily establish the Messianic Kingdom on earth just like He has absolute rule in heaven. We are to pray and thank our heavenly Father for all the good sustenance He gives us (daily bread). We practice repentance and ask for God’s forgiveness daily, knowing at the same time we must forgive others’ debts as God for the sake of Jesus Christ has forgiven us our sinful debts. We are to ask the Lord that He will not allow us to be overcome by the temptation to sin and displease Him, but to deliver us from the Tempter and the temptation he will use to separate us from the presence of God. In Matthew, there are eight (or nine) blessings, while in Luke there are four, followed by four woes. In Matthew, more than in Luke, the Beatitudes refer to the outstanding moral and spiritual qualities of Christian discipleship and being redeemed citizens of God’s kingdom. Behold, the ethereal luminosity on film-- as this part of the Sermon on the Mount is dramatized in the movie Jesus of Nazareth.
