The last few weeks have been a bit of a psychological and physical struggle. I have known since early in 2014 that the main vegetable beds supporting boards where beginning to rot and the posts were in places no longer holding the boards. As a temporary solution I knocked in a lot of supporting metal rods which held the boards in place during the growing season but I knew this would not last. The big problem was the supporting wooden posts although treated with preservative still rot and crumble after about 8 years. To replace the posts is a lot of work so I had to devise a simple system that would allow any rotten boards to be replaced without having to replace the supporting posts. What I have done here is to use large angle irons for the corners and strips of thick metal as outside supports which are concreted into the ground, the board’s just rest against them and are held in place by the weight of the soil in the raised bed. The first section done was of the long narrow raised bed, this will be used by the School Gardening Club in 2015. I am now working on the 3 larger beds, raising their heights and levelling off the soil. It is all a slow process but when done should make the whole area easier to maintain and more productive!
