The marvels of secondary combustion. Most of the heat is coming from coals. All the fire is burning smoke not wood (I know, wood doesnt burn its the gasses it gives off, I mean that the majority of fire is several inches from the logs). When you get a modern efficient wood stove really rolling you get a good coal bed at the bottom, a small flame breaking the wood down into coals, and a whole lot of flame from the smoke. You can see tubes with holes at the top of the video. These deliver very hot oxygen to the unburnt gasses we know as smoke and the smoke burns again. Essentially two fires. It makes the fire extremely efficient and extremely clean. You will see no smoke nor smell any burning on a good run.
