The most bittersweet thing about being transgender, I believe, is this feeling of voluntary total amnesia. What I mean by that is the overwhelming sense that I have taken on living a life for which I have no memory. The person I see in the mirror is a nearly-47-year-old woman - I am her, she is me - but I have no recollection of who she used to be. No matter how hard I try, I will never be able to remember what it was like to be a little girl, or a 13-year-old young woman, or an 30-year-old woman. Instead, the only history available to me is that of a man whose reality is as foreign to me as his memories.
