The woman who wrote the email forwarded by AG candidate Leslie Rutledge -- a piece of prose that has the author using lines like Jesus done sent dat baby and it doan make no diffence who be de daddy and Den, as dey be leavin, Mama done take me in her arms and hug me all tite and say, Miz Judith, you be de Angel of Jehovah -- has responded to the criticism, saying that if you think her email is racist, youre wrong, because: A) the email never actually discloses the ethnicity of the people involved, and B) Any implication of racism comes not from the story but from the reader’s unfamiliarity with literary technique. THIS JUST IN: If your literary technique includes the use of stereotypical dialect that would have made the writers of Amos and Andy say Whoa! Too racist! in 1928, you shouldnt be surprised if readers, you know, think youre mocking black people.
