Theres not a great deal of 2014 left, so what does the weather - TopicsExpress

Theres not a great deal of 2014 left, so what does the weather have in store for Hogmanay and the start of 2015? In a word....unsettled. Overnight and through tomorrow successive fronts will push in from the south west. These will produce periods of rain, sometimes heavy. Winds will be gusty from the south west, reaching gale force at times around exposed coasts and in the hills. The rain should clear during tomorrow afternoon giving a drier evening with a few showers and more broken cloud. It will be mild with temperatures close to double figures and a continued thaw of lying snow at all levels. There remains some uncertainty about New Years Day. Overnight and through Thursday a developing area of low pressure to the south west of the UK will deepen and track across northern Scotland. The track of the depression will influence winds speeds which look to be gale or severe gale force for Skye. At the moment it looks as if the centre of the low will pass close to Skye so the windiest weather may well be further south. However, I will be keeping an eye on the depressions track. So, the start of 2015 looks a bit wet and miserable with winds touching gale or severe gale force at times. There could well be a marked lull in the wind around lunch time / early afternoon as the centre of the low crosses close to Skye. Temperatures generally mild, but will tend to fall away through the afternoon as winds back into the west and pick up once again. Overnight and into Friday showers push in from the west and it will turn a fair bit colder. Winds westerly, strong to gale force, driving in increasingly wintry showers. These will be of hail or sleet at low levels, snow above about 300m. Saturday, a touch warmer, lighter winds and fewer showers.
