These two images, taken two hours apart, show contrails between the coast of Canada on the left and Europe (not seen) on the right. These are transatlantic flights. Air temperature, like the wind, runs in currents and we can see that all of the planes flying east and west across the ocean encountered a current of colder air running north to south towards left-of-center and contrails formed. These are called persistent contrails because here theyve lasted for 2 hours but they can last for days and even form large cirrus clouds.
