This beautiful piece is about a Chessie named Jake. written by his owner Robert Niebuhr after Jake passed away : My guardian is gone He was put to rest this past March Buried near his mother The eleven years that he walked and romped about this earth Are indelibly imprinted in my mind His bed still lies next to mine Where he lay thru the night Watching over me and mine He was always there to be hugged And maybe to give a slurp in return There was no compromise in his affection When he was in my truck His frame would be stretched from the back seat to the console He was a big muscular dog And as he lay He watched me The love just poured from his eyes Jake was Daisy’s only pup When she played with him She pulled him by his tail How he did scream When he would retrieve what I had thrown He would proudly come to my side Proudly waiting for me to take it and throw it again I didn’t teach him He learned it on his own I see many of his qualities in his son Luke To whom the mantle has now been passed Another Chesapeake None that I thought that I would ever own As I write tears leave trail upon my face I know That in the Bye and Bye Daisy, Jake, Penny, Luke and I Shall play and romp in the Fields of Forever Yes Jake you are gone But you will never be forgotten
