This country has allowed some terrible things in its history, and our racist history is probably the worst of it. The death of Trayvon Martin brought to the surface the continuing horror and degradation of racism that polite society prefers to ignore. The only good thing that could come out of such a tragedy, would be if by bringing this into the light of awareness we did something to end it. But that has to be done within ourselves, in our own dark thoughts and feelings. Making George Zimmerman pay for all the sins of America would not accomplish this. It would simply have allowed us to puff ourselves up and say “There, you see? We don’t abide by racism any more. ” But we do. And making him our scapegoat would simply have shown that in addition to not respecting each other, we also don’t respect the rule of law. Zimmerman was not on trial for his morality or ethics. He was not on trial for the generalized sin of American racism. And he was not, as many people on FB today don’t seem to realize, on trial for pulling the trigger on the gun that killed this young boy. The jury knows he did that. There are a thousand reasons why a trigger can be pulled. Zimmerman was on trial for having broken a specific written law called “2nd degree murder”. Fortunately, in this country, unlike many others, we do not allow the state to haul citizens off to prison whenever they feel like it. First, we demand that they Prove – and in the case of an accusation of murder, we demand that they prove Beyond Any Reasonable Doubt – that the particular legally-defined crime was committed. This protects us all from tyranny, despite the fact that errors will sometimes be made – we’re still better off having this kind of legal system than the alternative. If you watched the trial, it would be hard to claim that the jury had no rationale for saying “The State did NOT ‘Prove’, Beyond a Doubt. That the 2nd-degree –murder law was broken”. And all that is needed in America to keep us Out of prison, is any reasonable doubt. As a result, Zimmerman goes free. Now, instead of yelling and swearing an acting out about the verdict of this trial, it would be a good time to work hard to end the racism and hatred in our own selves, and to work hard toward its end throughout America.
