This evening begins Tu BAv, the 15th day of the month of Av, a time associated with love in Jewish tradition. An old Jewish legend says that 40 days before a person is conceived in the womb, God decrees who that persons life partner will be (Talmud: Moed Katan 18b). The sages calculate that Tu BAv falls 40 days before Elul 25, the traditional date of the creation of the universe, and infer that at that time - before the foundation of the world - God chose us to be His beloved (Eph. 1:4).
