This is a really, really long post about a really obscure topic - I do not apologize. Skip down to the next funny meme if you like. Ryan, Tyler and Galen, this is for you. I was and remain a casual Dashboard Confessional fan only; some great songs, but nothing Ive ever had on repeat for days or weeks. I quite like Chris Carrabba and companys new project TWIN FORKS, who I saw earlier tonight. But I have, for fifteen years, lived and loved with FURTHER SEEMS FOREVER, a band Chris started in Florida in the late 90s with a bunch of hardcore kids ex of the late, great STRONGARM. Further made one record with Chris before he focused on Dashboard full-time, and no detail is needed on how big THAT band became, and, in Chriss own words earlier, how lucky I was. And then a couple years ago, long after Further made two more brilliant records in 2003 and 04 with two different vocalists(thats right - three records in four years with three singers) and then left around 2006 - waaay after all of that, and their reputation still spreading and showing its influence nowadays, FSF and Chris got back together to make a killer fourth record, Penny Black - a tremendous new effort from the band. Somehow Chris and I got to talking about Further earlier this evening after Twin Forks got done(I still meet a bunch of Further fans at the shows now, and once in a while theres one or two who you can tell were REALLY Further fans, he told me), and for a solid twenty minutes I got a history of one of my favourite bands from its inception. Some highlights: - Chris actually filled in on guitar with NEW FOUND GLORY many years ago when Chad Gilbert of NFG was occupied with SHAI HULUD - Toby Morse of H2O was one of Dashboards earliest and biggest fans, wearing t-shirts onstage every night - on Penny Black, Chris told me, I used a really nice vocal mic during recording - way nicer than any we had back in the day...and I wish I had used one that wasnt so good; I think I didnt capture well some of the nastiness my voice has. - on drummer Steve Kleisath, who drummers know as being insanely mathematical and skilled(also a world-record holder at a certain video game as of this year - Google it), Chris said, He actually was really in a groove[on Penny Black], which I loved, but I think some of the fans would really have preferred he go nuts[like he used to.] - Chris was instrumental in finding both Jason Gleason(FSFs second vocalist) and Jon Bunch(their third, formerly of SENSE FIELD) to song for FSF Further chief songwriter Josh Colbert lives near Chris in Nashville, and Further never really go away; Chris does Twin Forks, and the others in FSF are fulltime workers with families, but the band never really stopped once Chris rejoined. Man, I hope I see them again. THIS CONCLUDES THIS LONG-ASS POST. If you know me through Babylon, or Algonquin, and youve never heard of this band, well, here you go:
