This is a travesty. Yes, the case was poorly prosecuted, but a jury of six women with five of them white is not by any stretch of the imagination representative. The least George Zimmerman should have been done for is manslaughter. His responsibility for the death of Trayvon Martins was clear from all accounts, what was supposedly not clear was what happened before he shot him. The jury apparently bought the story that Trayvon was beating Mr Zimmerman so hard that he was afraid for his life, so he pulled his gun and shot him before Trayvon beat him to death! Huh? No time to warn Trayvon he has a gun? No time to fire a warning shot? All that while, he didn’t even find it helpful to identify himself as a neighbourhood watchman? He only had time to pull the gun and shoot immediately; not just shoot randomly, but aim at his heart? One shot. It didn’t matter that test results indicated Trayvon never handled the gun, so there was no struggle for it between both. It didn’t also matter that analysis of scrapings from underneath Trayvon’s fingernails contained no DNA of Zimmerman to indicate any prolonged struggle between them. So, in the end, we have a dead 17 year old who with his bag of Skittles and cans Arizona Iced Tea had a right to be where he was killed and a 28 year old told not to leave his car by the police walking away free from the scene and today, walking away from a civilized court. Free. No, he was not freed by the technicality of the law; he was freed by the conspiracy of a society still too immersed in racism to admit that a white man has just killed another black teenager in cold blood. Trayvon’s blood cries to high heavens and Zimmerman will always hear it until he goes deaf. Sleep Well, Trayvon
