This is significant at various levels....... To a large extent talk gets you places, but it is walking the talk that really moves the mountains of our being... The correlation between beliefs held and the behavior exhibited needs to be explored by us... There are a number of perfectly reasoned beliefs that lead to unacceptable behavior and unacceptable results... We need to ensure that our behavior is not driven by an agenda that discriminates at the behavioral level between various acceptable alternatives or follows a discriminatory policy that divides and delivers different consequences for the same action by different people.. An example to illustrate the point.... The Caste System in India.. As Propounded by Manu, it was a simple classification of the types of people and the types of work available and a sort of bill of rights for each class... According to this classification you have intellectuals, firebrands, practical and profit driven folk. Intellectuals do well as advisors, teachers, lawyers, priests, science, research etc. Such folk can advise on how to use power, but direct power to them was a no no.. Essentially because according to Manu, what drives such folks is not people or their concerns but ideas and ideals.... Such folk given power directly will lead to disaster according to Manu... They are good at formulating policy but given power directly leads to some serious consequences... As per Manu and his classification.... Lenin, Mao, Hitler, Nehru would be classified as Brahmins according to their Nature.... So would Nelson Mandela, Dalai Lama, Aung Sang Syu Kyi, Pol Pot, Robert Mugabe, Narasimha Rao, Manmohan Singh etc... As per Manu, it is the intrinsic property of a person... it certainly was not meant to be a hereditary system of privilege and discrimination it turned out to be.... We can have endless debates on this topic, but I would like to sidestep them for a time... If you see the list of folk I have listed as Brahmins by Nature, you will see a pattern emerging.... These folks are driven by ideas not anything else.... These ideas happen to relate to the public good, therefore they attracted the masses. They have got subjected to immense hardship and challenges but their idealism has remained intact through adversity.... Whether their idealism stood the test of prosperity and power, I leave you to judge.... The purpose of the digression was to illustrate that your beliefs may be rooted in Logic, Reason and the Urge to be Fair and Compassionate, care needs to be taken to ensure that the behavior that springs from such wellsprings is acceptable, humane and elevates that best in us.... Our beliefs when looked at objectively, are nothing more than ideals wearing work clothes.. How we translate such ideals into practice is what we are discussing here. Please read the photo again now.... And now consider it in the light of what I have pointed out here... There is a lot of injustice and there is a whole lot of atrocity going on in the name of religion, nation, business.... We have to ensure that we are not contributing to the maintenance and upkeep of such atrocities... By remaining silent, we become accessories after the fact.... If you are proud of your origins, you should ensure that thoughts, words and actions originating from you are things you can look back with pride on when viewed from the lens of Equality, Fraternity and Respect in all dimensions of being and existence...
