This is the essential problem facing the development of our spiritual consciousness as a species. We have these two extremes - religious zealots and atheistic materialists - while the mystic middlemen, who sensibly integrate spiritual experiences with scientific rationality, are left to deal with the mess of conflict (cursed with the full knowledge of why such conflict exists, yet also cursed with an audience that wont listen or ignorantly denies). I think the real confusion lies in the lack of recognition of the vast difference between knowledge and experience. There is also a gross misunderstanding of the role metaphor plays in our comprehension of ourselves and our environment. Everything we think we know can only ever be a metaphor ultimately referring back to an experience.
