This is the gist of the petition I just signed re Australian Minister Scott Morrison condoning inhumane management of Manus Island detention centre for illegal refugees! Demand Scott Morrison show improvements on Manus Island Refugees, Petition In early December 2013, Amnesty International presented Scott Morrison, the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, with our report ‘This is Breaking People’ which included 70 recommendations aimed at improving the cruel and humiliating conditions we uncovered during our visit to the Manus Island detention centre. We exposed that people on Manus Island are being denied adequate drinking water, shoes, proper health care, soap and sanitation, privacy and shelter from the sun. We showed that, together with Papua New Guinea, Australia is holding asylum seekers in a cruel limbo -- deliberately denying them information about their asylum claims or the length of their detention. We told the Minister that this is breaking people. On the evening of Monday 17 February, terrible violence broke out at the Manus Island Detention Centre. Details of what happened are still emerging -- but we know that 77 people were injured and one man, tragically, was killed. Back in December, in response to our recommendations, the Minister said: “Where things are presented that can improve, then of course, we will do that.” Tell Mr Morrison that, given the tragic events of the last three days, he must now respond to Amnesty’s findings as a matter of urgency. Petition text: Dear Minister Morrison, I am greatly concerned about the conditions for detainees at the Manus Island detention centre, especially given the violence and death that has occurred there recently. On 11 December 2013, Amnesty International delivered to you the report, This is Breaking People, detailing 70 recommendations for Manus Island detention centre, many for urgent improvements to conditions. I welcomed your public commitment on 13 December to improving conditions at Manus detention centre. As a matter of urgency, please provide an update on the improvements made since your public statement. I call on the Australian Government to urgently respond in full to all the recommendations in Amnesty Internationals report.
