This video from near my hometown has been posted quite a bit on my feed lately, and while I agree with and am very happy about all of the support that this man has seen after this post, I think that the scope of the discussion needs to be broader. Its great that everyone is concerned and outraged by direct racial slurs--as anyone should be by any kind of slur, whether it be racial, homophobic, misogynistic, or otherwise. What both the kids and their dad said was clearly and obviously harmful and full of hate. But the issue is that a lot of times when people focus on taking down such obvious forms of racism (or other forms of discrimination--this really applies to anything), it is easy ignore the more subtle, structural forms of racism that perpetuate its existence. If all discrimination in our society looked like this and had this many red flags, it would be at least a little easier to eliminate, because everybody can tell that these guys are losers. The bare minimum is to be outraged by stuff like this, but in order to really make substantial progress and instigate change, it would be great to see my community and other communities around the country take more steps to recognize the societal, structural forms of discrimination that still exist. youtu.be/iKVQX35yYc8
