This week’s new movies as the cinemas: Amour, Manet, The Company You Keep, The Internship, World War Z and The East Amour: The love of an aging couple. It is about old age and dying. The movie won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film a d a Best Actress nomination for Riva. Leon van Nierop (Citizen) gives it 9 stars. He says it is brilliant but emotionally brutal. Diane de Beer (The star) gives it 8 stars. She says this is as close to perfect film making as it gets but the movie is not for sissies. Diane’s review is very well done. I will give her high marks for her prose! I give it a year: About a couple’s relationship after marriage. The star is Simon Baker from The Mentalist. Helen Herimbi (The Star) thinks it is rubbish. She gives it 4 stars. Anel Viktor (Beeld) gives it 6 stars. She thinks it is basically a crude collection of sketches that does not work. Leon van Nierop (Citizen) gives it 6 stars and calls it a black comedy. Watch this only if you like to laugh at somebody being buried alive through his or her own stupidity. Hmm.. sounds like fun? Manet: Portraying Life: Documentary about Manet. Theresa Smith (The Star) gives it 8 stars. The Company You Keep: With Robert Redford (also the director – now 76 with a teenage daughter in the movie.). It is about the 1960s American resistance movement (Weathermen) and how their actions all those years ago are catching up with them. Laetitia Pople (Beeld) gives it 6 stars. It is an engaging story but can sometimes be a bit superficial. She liked it as good entertainment that touches on some deeper aspects of the past and present political life. Peter Feldman (Citizen) gives it 7 stars. He likes the movie and says Redford manages to pull it all together at a moderate pace – even ignoring some hotter, more contentious issues along the way. Diane de Beer (The Star) rates it as a 6. She thinks of all the characters, Robert is the least convincing, especially the age difference between him and his daughter. Apart from that, she liked it. Barry Ronge (Sunday Times) gives it 8 stars. He says the please het got from the movie was its textured, detailed characters and actors. The Internship: With Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn. Comedy about two guys looking for a job at Google. Leon van Hierop (The Citizen) loves it with an 8 star rating. He describes it as a comedy with heart and that you will be pleasantly surprised. On the other hand, Riette Grobler (Beeld) thinks it is rubbish with 4 stars and calls it a long advertisement for Google. The only thing that saves the movie are the chemistry between Wilson and Vaughn and how interesting the Google complex is. Helen Herimbi (The Star) thinks is works (mostly) and gives it 6 stars. She also thinks the title should rather have been Google: The Two Hour Advert. Barry Ronge (Sunday Times) rates it at 6 stars and says it has a warm, gentle and funny script. The young cast is charming and they handle their roles with a dry twist of humour. World War Z: With Brad Pitt. The Zombies threaten to overtake the world but Brad comes to the rescue. Theresa Smith (The Star) did not really like it and gives it 6 stars. The movie is a disjointed product and should be called Pitt vs the Zombies. Peter Feldman (Citizen) did not like it either with 5 stars. He calls it a bizarre blend of generic zombie material and an apocalyptic disaster, with a storyline that hops from location to location. It disappoints. Rochelle Human (Beeld) loved it with 8 stars. Barry Ronge (Sunday Times) gives it 6 stars. He says the special effects are mind-blowing and the action is breath taking. However, he wonders if this hectic horror will please a wide audience. Tymon Smith (The Times) says the most interesting thing about the movie is the story of its making. It was made by committee with a pissed-off director and a nervous studio, which results in an uneven, unnecessarily expensive hodgepodge. It often feels downbeat and unsure of itself as it drags to a muffled conclusion. Hmm, I think I will go with Rochelle’s assessment and just try to love it! The East: Espionage thriller. Barry Ronge (Sunday Times) gives it 6 stars. Release next week: The Wolverine with Hugh Jackman.
