Thoughts, Views and Opinions? Senior dog adopted from shelter and offered for sale on Craigslist the same day June 25, 2014 According to Tuesdays KHON 2 News, a senior dog who was adopted from the Hawaiian Humane Society last weekend, was promptly offered for sale in a Craigslist ad by her new owner. Little Sally Mae, a 10-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, hit what seemed to be a homeless dog jackpot on Sunday when she was adopted by a woman...unfortunately, on the very same day, dreams of a happily-ever-after were dashed when the new owner offered Sally Mae for sale on Craigslist. The woman claimed that she did not have time to care for the senior dog. Adding insult to injury, the new owner seemed to want to turn a profit on the newly acquired dog; the price in the advertisement was $200 and the original fee to adopt was a mere $85. According to Hawaii News Now, the advertisement also stated that Sally Mae was only five-years-old, not her true age of ten years. Following the discovery of the ad, Christina Kam, Hawaiian Humane Society’s communications and event coordinator, expressed disappointment over the Craigslist ad: “It’s really disappointing to think that animals are really seen as a commodity versus your loving pet that’s part of your family so that’s really hard for us,” According to Hawaii News Now, Sally Maes owner did eventually reach out to the shelter and she let them know that Sally Mae did not initially fit in, but now, they want to try and make it work; the woman was surprised that the ad upset so many people. The shelter currently does not have any policies in place to prevent new adopters from offering their pet for sale...following this incident, that may change.
