To the Editor: Pennsylvania’s election laws are rigged. The two - TopicsExpress

To the Editor: Pennsylvania’s election laws are rigged. The two old parties have conspired to erect artificial barriers designed to keep their competition off the ballot. That is why we so rarely have the opportunity to vote for, say, a Libertarian or an independent candidate. It is the main reason why incumbents all too often run completely unopposed (voters have NO choice) for many state House, Senate and lower races. This is unhealthy. It has resulted in a crop of mostly career politicians holding office that polls show are held in very low regard by the public. We desperately need more choice in candidates, parties and ideas. Politicians need strong competition! In the interest of fairness and good government, PA Senator Mike Folmer has introduced a bill called “The Voters’ Choice Act” (SB195) that would level the playing field. The “VCA” would make getting on the ballot in PA about the same for all political parties and independents. It would make PA ballot access laws similar to those in Delaware and the vast majority of other states, which seem to be working just fine. There is NO reason that this bill should not become law, except that the old party establishments will, of course, want to protect their exclusive club. Urge both your state representatives to support good government and the Voters’ Choice Act. Roy A. Minet
