To the Left with two lines from Joe Weil A deer almost dies twice from both directions threading between passing cars I turn left off-road onto tow path Pale red shale rises from shallow river like dried mud-caked scales on a prehistoric snake long as a mountain range Hasnt rained in weeks One knee up one foot down Each step a crossroads Heart knocking on a door of leaves and cinders Beware of woolly bear below Half way upstream against the wind into the wind Now wind at my back Everything but this brief visit impossible Look a kingfisher bobbing above the water on a tree branch like a fishing pole Why not sing
