To the honorable board members of the Utah Debate Commission, - TopicsExpress

To the honorable board members of the Utah Debate Commission, #utpol As one who has been active in the Utah political process for the majority of my life, as a former candidate and as a former a decade long Party officer for the Utah Democratic Party, I am writing this post to ask that you reconsider the guidelines in which your organization decides which candidates can and can not participate in your debates. As great friend and a political mentor used to say, Politics is the market place for ideas. I wont add his name because I have not had the opportunity to see if we see eye to eye on this opinion, but I believe that one of the reasons we have low voter turnout is that people have stopped believing that their voice has the chance to be heard. It is my understanding that the criteria for inclusion in your debates is based on the percentages a Party receives during the election. If this is incorrect feel free to correct me, but it is my belief that we should not only include the voice of those who vote with the majorities, but that we should also include the voices of those who vote with the small minorities. It may be that some of these voices also belong to those who have decided to not vote at all. I would hope that you would reconsider allowing any candidate who is legally on the ballot to participate in the debates governed by your organization. Although my favorite candidates already have their spot in your debates I believe that any Utahn who legally finds their way on to the ballot should have the same opportunity to be heard as those who win the the nomination process of the Utah Democratic Party and the Utah Republican Party, respectfully. I think the Utah Debate Commission is a fantastic idea. I know and respect so many of you who have found your place on the board and I believe that if you include all the candidates you are then truly building a system that encourages voters and potential voters to engage. Thank you for taking the time to consider this request. With every best wish, Robert D.
