Today I decided to tackle the acres of grass,weedsand whatever has grownup. I normally start in a certain place but just changed habit.after about 20 minutes I slowed down due to some ground movement, A flutter followed by a long but familiar screech. I dismounted the mower to find a juvenile hawk not yet ready to fly had been blown there from the horrific wind. As I bent down to assess the situation this tiny creature opened his mouth with an ear piercing screech. I smiled to myself thinking, this little guy is totally unaware he was overpowered. I cupped him in my hands checking for injuries. After seeing he was seemingly ok I put him in a canvas screened cat carrier with a bundle of dry grass. He calmed and tucked his head in the grass. Now came the hard part.Trying to find someone to help this little one. Tiredly calling every fish and game number in the phone book and searching the internet, I was able to contact our local fish and game. (who of course had been here before.) After a quick assessment he gathered the little guy up with him. Not sure of their destination but secure the little guy would live to screech another day. I would love to show you a picture of my little night hawk but my pleasure would not be a price I was willing to pay for more trauma to him. Please remember these are protected animals needed by our earth and do not make good pets or even worse, target practice. thanks for reading my story of a precious day given to me and a little bird called Screech.
