Today I purchased the remaining school supplies for our - TopicsExpress

Today I purchased the remaining school supplies for our scholarship fund. We have enough supplies for 100 children, as we planned. We have for instance 1800 exercise books for 100 children this trimester alone (October to December). We are also nearly done our list of semifinal candidates for scholarship (From 100 candidates we select 35 for follow up interviews). The list will be done for Monday (the official start of school) also as planned. Here is a snapshot of Henri Deshamps. The premier school supply shop in Haiti. They are the official carrier of all the text books on the Education Ministers elementary and high school reading lists. The catalog contains the prices of MOST of the textbooks used in the school system by grade. Next week I get the reading lists of the books each school has. By the end of next week I will have purchased all the textbooks and be publishing our finalists as well as the tables I used to come to this decision with the help of Donald Guerrier, and friends of THN here in Haiti. The final shot is of my base of operations here in Haiti. This image represents about 2/3 of the components of our school supply kits. Each child will receive as few as 12, 72 page exercise books in the case of secondary school students (as suggested by most schools) or as many as 20, 20 page exercise books for the younger children. By Monday (God willing) each of these bags and boxes will be divided into class and category for each elementary and secondary school class. Today we enumerated the numbers of children in each grade by school and in total. So that the little guys get the crayons and the bigger guys get the geometry sets and the eldest get a bible of their very own. Which is something people ask me for daily, by the way. Any how my favorite part about this program is that every kid who applied gets a years worth of school supplies free. In the final image we see our first semifinal awardee for full scholarship holding her application which was filled out in May-June of this year. I am quite certain she will also be a finalist after her interviewing both her mother and grandmother a couple days ago. The home had no food in the house at all, save a dozen grains of rice stuck to the bottom of a metal dish and a sauce pan half filled with home made citrus juice. Which is why in tandem with school supports I have two drums filled with food supplies. So as we see the need we can supply food to those families who need it. As you can see in the next photo, which I asked to snap as I was passing by the next day, we gave then sufficient food as they could share with the chickens ;) Regardless, She will receive a years worth of school supplies no matter how the competition works out and so long as I am here they will have enough to eat (including the occasional ice cream). Peace out
