Today conduct an emotion meditation. This is when you start out by focusing on your breath and then make a mental note of all the feelings that come into your mind/body. If nothing comes to mind then focus on your breath. What this does is train you to be present with your emotions as they are a sign of your thinking/beliefs at that moment. Is it positive emotion or negative emotion? Make no judgement about yourself as you observe your emotions. Just note them in a non judgmental way. Perhaps you feel jealousy, then note to yourself Ah I am experiencing jealousy. Perhaps you are experiencing grief, then note to yourself I am experiencing grief right now. Perhaps you are experiencing happiness, then note I am experiencing happiness. Emotions are complex and there is rarely just one. Its perhaps easy to note the big emotions but are there some smaller ones? If you are experiencing happiness is there also some fear? Perhaps fear of loosing the happy feeling? Be gentle with yourself and do not judge yourself for having any of these feelings. Our feelings are just the result of a thought/belief that have entered our minds. THATs ALL. By simply noting the emotions your are taking the first step in allowing them to be and not judging them. You are not making things worse by beating yourself up for being angry for example. You are also distancing your self slightly from the underlying emotions/thought/belief. Meditating on emotions trains your mind to be present with them and if you are in a situation in life that causes some emotional responses you can/will notice then first and that simple act allows your to take a step back and decide if the underlying thinking/beliefs are indeed true. This distance then allows you to think more clearly and if needed you can either now or at a later time take some positive action to change a situation that is not what you want. Do this on a regular basis and you will amazed at how much more aware you will be of your emotions in your daily life. Initially you may be put off by what you discover. Many times our emotions are so automatic we may not be aware of them so discovering them may be an uncomfortable surprise. Relax they are just emotions based on stories that your imagination has created. Dont judge them and let them be.
