Today is Teacher’s Day | September 5 Lord Krishna told Arjuna in Gyanakarma Sanyasa Yoga, thus: तद्विद्धि प्रणिपातेन परिप्रश्नेन सेवया । उपदेक्ष्यन्ति ते ज्ञानं ज्ञानिनस्तत्त्वदर्शिनः ॥ ४- ३४ ॥ Acquire this transcendental knowledge by humble reverence, by sincere inquiry, and by service (to a Self-realised guru). The wise who have realised the truth will teach you. [Bagavad : canto 4, verse 34] The guru is the “dispeller of darkness” (from gu, “darkness” and ru, “that which dispels”). This is what I have found in the “Guru Gita” (verse: 17). A true, God-illumined guru is one who, in his attainment of self-mastery, has realised his identity with the omnipresent Spirit. Such a person is uniquely qualified to lead the seeker on his or her inward journey toward perfection. “The blind cannot lead the blind,” said Paramahansar. “Only a master, one who knows God, may rightly teach others about Him. To regain one’s divinity one must have such a master or guru. He who faithfully follows a true guru becomes like him, for the guru helps to elevate the disciple to his own level of realisation.” The guru-disciple relationship is the highest expression of friendship, for it is based on unconditional divine love and wisdom. It is the loftiest and most sacred of all relationships. One who partakes of this relationship is on the way to wisdom and freedom. I revere all my gurus! I was first nurtured and mentored by my father and mother, and I was under the tutelage under the teachers in my first school at Saraswati Vidyalaya, Pune a good five decades hence, the teachers at BN Pooddar Estate Kendriya Vidyalaya, Mathura; the teachers at Punjab Regiment Center, Meerut; the professors and lecturers at National College Tiruchirapalli; the professors at Meerut University (rechristened as Chaudhary Charan Singh University); the professors at Delhi University; and the professors at JNU, Delhi. I would not have scaled to this level had I not been sculpted by these esteemed aachaaryaas. My pranaams to teachers all over the world! Pictures depict gurukulams! Vedic period to 21st century Gurukulam has its significance. The picture in the bottom is a recent scene captured at Gurudev Rabindranath Tagores Shantiniketan.
