Today is the 238 anniversary of the birth of the Corps (USMC). On November 10, 1775, a Corps of Marines was created by a resolution of the Continental Congress. Since that date many thousands of men and women have borne the name Marine. The record of our Corps is one which will bear comparison with that of the most famous military organizations in the worlds history. Marines have fought in every corner of the globe against this Nations enemies. In every battle and skirmish since the birth of our Corps Marines have acquitted themselves with the greatest distinction, winning new honors on each occasion until the term Marine has come to signify all that is highest in military efficiency and soldierly virtue. So long as that spirit continues to flourish Marines will be found equal to every emergency in the future as they have been in the past, and the people of our Nation will regard us as worthy successors to the long line of illustrious men and women who have served as Warriors of the Air, Land and Sea since the founding of the Corps. These are just not words but truths that history has recorded and the blood shed on the battlefields. The title Marine is never given but earned. It is earned in boot camp, strengthened in training and purified in combat. Marines never retreat we just fight in a different direction. Our battles are won because of our tenacity to carry the fight to our enemies. Marines fight for right and freedom, for honor, for the United States, for the people of this Great Nation to enjoy a way of life unparallelled in history. Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz said it simply and best: On Iwo Island, uncommon valor was a common virtue. 1945. This is who we have been throughout the 238 years of our existence and will continue to be for generations of marines to come. Semper Fideles.
