Today is the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhiji, one of India’s most charismatic and dynamic leaders. Indiraji served as India’s third Prime Minister between 1966 and 1977 and then from 1980 till 1984. She served as Chief of Staff under Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru between 1947 and 1964 and was elected Congress President in 1959. After the demise of Pt. Nehru, Shri. Lal Bahadur Shastri became the Prime Minister and it was after his sudden demise that Indiraji consented to be the next leader. Indiraji was known for her political acumen and decisiveness. She was fiercely patriotic and her foreign policy contributed significantly to India achieving recognition and respect among the world’s leaders. She recognized the independence movement in East Pakistan and went to war with Pakistan, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh. In a poll organised by India Today in 2001 Indiraji was voted the greatest Indian Prime Minister. She was also named Woman of the Millennium in a poll organised by the BBC in 1999. On this day, let us remember the contributions and sacrifices made by this brave leader who led India through its fledgling steps.
