Today we release Maya Angelou from this earth. In rememberance of her Im reminded of the poem she wrote for James Baldwin When Great Trees Fall. This poem I wrote for her for this day When Great Queens Die Ashe When the Towers Fell dust rose as debris flooded the streets chasing spirits on legs to safety …then some took wings. When the Towers Fell glass dropped down like tears on sad faces. Smoke crept in through nostrils suffocating lungs - some no longer breathe blood shot eyes – some no longer see while bodies collapsing in the street then some took wings When Great Queens die we are but for a moment paralyzed, hushed. Our mind racing for words of consolation. Our hands reaching for bodies to hold for comfort. Our knowings of them their smell…their touch their tangibility now slowly dissipating like ashes blown away or thrown across massive waters scattered – adrift. No longer humanly connected the physical becomes detached only to be made whole again And we all must travel this way. And when great queens die their words once uttered rise up in us quietly…still. These words once penned no longer lay in black ink on off-white sheets of parchment they begin to dance a jig in us. Their energy makes letting go light never easy… lending us permission to release and live. Because they lived, and was, and is, and will always forever be.
