Today’s Talent Tip Of The Day: Ticket To Heaven? I’m sure our post will ruffle some feathers but if it didn’t we would be doing what we are called to do. Saying that I believe after doing some research it was in the early 60’s when the first tickets were sold to a southern gospel concert. Before then gospel singers and groups primarily sang in churches across the country back when the goal was to share the message through song and bring souls to the Lord through their evangelistic message. Im not sure why it happened but something changed when the spot lights came on. Promoters crossed over from country music seeing an opportunity to cash in on willing gospel artist and groups. Soon we began to see monthly gospel sings popping up in theatres and gymnasiums across the country and the trend was on. Slowly and steadily groups moved from singing in churches to halls selling tickets everywhere. Many have their ideas of why is happened but most trains of thought go to the idea of artist saw a way to keep from having to do love offerings to finding a more secure payday. Well, something else also happened when this trend began, the birth of “the show”. I can’t remember a time when and group or artist that came to my church was it called a “show”. With the creation of the “show” something else happened. The evacuation of ministry. As the world stepped in, ministry stepped out. We’ve all heard stories and some of us have even witnessed the horror stories of the wild things that happened on busses and the after “show” parties that would go on. Soon concerts or “shows” like this were popping up everywhere as promoters saw an opportunity to make a buck became a regular routine. In today’s world the modern groups have change the terminology to use the term gig for their “shows” and today it has become a common thing. As these “shows” grew something else happened. The decline in churches that are having artist and groups in anymore. You see, pastors also saw what was going on and realized the ministry was leaving and self promotion was taking over. They didn’t want these kinds of artist and groups in the churches. Thus the weekly comments we get from people saying churches just don’t have singers in anymore. Well I here to tell you that they still do but it’s not about the “show”. It’s about the ministry that causes a pastor to invite you in. Sadly, some people still believe it’s things like awards and recognition that will get them there but it doesn’t take them long to see that’s not the case. Pastors are looking for services not “shows”. They want the old type of ministry that groups use to bring in days gone by when artist and groups even got down on their knees and prayed with people. So I ask you, will that ticket get anyone to heaven? Are you doing “shows” for the sake of the business? Ask yourself this simple question. What if there was a needing soul that really needed to hear the word and they couldn’t afford a ticket to your show? Are you responsible for their salvation? What if you were? Billy Graham ministered to untold numbers across the world and never sold one ticket. Why are you?
