Tonight’s post is mysterious portrait of a fascinating historic figure. It is attributed to Sir Geoffrey Kneller (1646–1723), the prolific leading portrait painter of the late 17/ early 18th Century. The subject is Edmund Waller (1606-1687) an English poet and politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1624 and 1679. Elected to Parliament at the age of 16, he quickly gained a reputation as a masterful orator. He was also a celebrated lyric poet, long before the publication of his poems in 1645. Despite his eloquent efforts to placate Oliver Cromwell and Charles II, Waller was forced into exile for nearly a decade. His highly-refined poetry, particularly his heroic couplets, were much admired by Alexander Pope and John Dryden and definitely more successful than his political career!
