Too often the most courageous among us are lost from history. Essentially everyone knows who Rosa Parks was, but how about Claudette Colvin? Colvin wouldnt give up a seat on the bus nine months before the famous Rosa Parks arrest. Colvin did this out of conscience after being inspired by similar acts of moral courage she learned about in school. Sad, the leaders of the Civil Rights Movement decided they needed a better poster child for the issue. Rosa Parks was chosen as fitting to repeat the act. In 2009, some light was shed, when Phillip Hoose won the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature for his book “Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice,” Rosa Parks courage should be no less admired, but we should know who this woman is and celebrate her courage as well. nytimes/2009/11/26/books/26colvin.html?_r=0
