Tough weekend @ Goss. March 23, 2014 - Oregon State Baseball Drops Finale To Arizona State CORVALLIS, Ore. – Arizona State scored four runs in its final two innings to defeat No. 4 Oregon State on Sunday in the rubber game of their Pacific-12 Conference series before a crowd of 2,961 at Goss Stadium. ASU (12-10 overall, 3-3 Pac-12 Conference) took the final two games of the series to hand OSU (19-5, 4-2) its first back-to-back losses since Feb. 21-22, when Oregon State fell to Nebraska and Michigan State in its first two games at the Aramark Pac-12-Big Ten Challenge at Surprise, Ariz. The Beavers then went on a 15-1 tear before losing on Saturday. The Sun Devils scored the decisive run in the eighth inning. Brian Severn led off with a double, was sacrificed to third and then beat the throw to the plate on Dalton Dinatale’s grounder to first base. It was Dinatale’s third RBI of the game and his fourth of the series; he also knocked in the tying run with two outs in the ninth in ASU’s 3-2, 10-inning win on Saturday. They added three more insurance runs in the ninth for the final margin. Closer Ryan Burr pitched his second scoreless inning in the ninth for his second save of the weekend and fifth overall to cement ASU’s first series win at Goss Stadium since 2007. The Beavers had won the previous three series in Corvallis, and four of the last six overall before this weekend. Starters Darin Gillies of ASU and Jace Fry of Oregon State matched zeroes through five innings before the Sun Devils broke the scoreless tie with three runs in the sixth. RJ Ybarra’s RBI single made it 1-0 and two more crossed on Dinatale’stwo-out, bases-loaded single through the right side. The Beavers replied with three in the home half to pull even. Kavin Keyes singled, Michael Conforto walked and Dylan Davis singled to plate Keyes with their first run. Conforto and Davis moved up a base on a wild pitch and both scored when second baseman Drew Stankiewicz booted a grounder by Jeff Hendrix, tying the game 3-3. However, OSU’s offense stalled at that point. It had just two baserunners the rest of the way and ASU returned home with its first series win at Goss Stadium since 2007. The Beavers had won the previous thee in Corvallis, and four of the last six overall before this weekend. Keyes singled twice and scored for OSU; he was the lone Beaver with more than one hit as Gillies, Aboites and Burr combined on a six-hitter. Conforto walked and singled and has reached base safely in 23 of 24 games. The crowd of 2,961 raised the season total to 27,966 in 11 openings, an average of 2,542 per date. The Beavers have drawn 2,032 or more to every game. The Beavers return to action at 5:35 p.m. Tuesday with a home nonconference game against Seattle University.
