Tourney will go on as planned Marina area docks being repaired, - TopicsExpress

Tourney will go on as planned Marina area docks being repaired, no damage to Wyndham and fuel is being pumped, nearly all charterboats came out without significant damage By Pat McDonell Director As you might expect, we are getting a lot of calls. No sponsors or teams have cancelled. The news and Facebook have been useful for real information and without question, Cabo has its work cut out for it. That said, we are aware of the damage, and where it is the worst. It will not affect the tournament-site areas. The official position at Western Outdoors Publications is this: The Cabo Tuna Jackpot will not be postponed, nor will it be cancelled, and the areas in which the event is held and staged at the marina, will be up and running soon and many facets are already operational at the marina. Quickly, Hurricane Polo is expected to follow a path off tot he Pacific, offshore, with just rain, not extensive winds. We all hope. As far a recent reports, the Wyndham, as the old Plaza Las Glorias, was built to handle such storms, and is cleaning up and is in good shape. Very little damage. Tracy Ehrenberg and several (most) other fleets removed their boats and had no damage. Tony’s Restaurant just below the hotel on the malecon, for example, sustained little damage and is open and serving food, primarily to employees and families, and those in need of food, said Tracy. Basically, reports I have from friends like Tracy who live there said the marina is a mess, but 90 percent of the boats emerged unscathed, either because they were prepared for the winds (canvas and outriggers pulled) or they were pulled from the marina altogether. Sunken boats seen on the news, mostly pangas and water taxis, were the result of no bilge pumps or pumps that didn’t work as the rains hit. Some boats were damaged by other boats that broke free with docks attached, but those boats are repairable. Most came through fine. One outer marina and small fuel dock owned by the Ehrenbergs was beat up from the massive surge. So there is real work to be done, but the marinas in the coming weeks will be up and running, but with fewer docks outer docks. That does not affect the event. The word yesterday, Wednesday, Sept. 17, from Tracy was that boat fuel was being pumped at the marina. Docks were being repaired. In other words, the marina area where the event is held did pretty well and in seven weeks will be in good shape. The pictures and video of downtown show a real mess, but in the coming weeks the paved roads will be clear, power will be back up, the airport’s older terminal will be functional, possibly both. It will take months for things in Cabo to look “normal” and we will do all we can as an event to raise disaster relief funds. For now, Bisbee’s (bisbees) has a secure method for donations for families of the fishing community, and I would suggest you go to their website and see what you can donate. These people of Baja, including your captains for the Cabo Tuna Jackpot tournament, will need items. Just ask. I cannot tell you if your charter sportfisher was damaged, but when telephone communication is open to Cabo by the weekend (it’s sporadic right now), e-mail or call to find out the condition of your charterboat. From what I hear, nearly all charterboats are operational. They were prepared for the wind and surge. Some people have suggested we postpone or cancel the Cabo Tuna Jackpot. That is a callous and over-reactive attitude on so many levels, particularly seven weeks out. If you think businesses in Cabo would “appreciate” that gesture, the opposite is true. My attitude is that Cabo needs us to come down, and are counting on us. The area, especially the immediate downtown and marina, can recover quickly. They need the dollars, they need relief and they need compassion. Bring all three when you come Nov. 5-8. The Cabo Tuna Jackpot Facebook page will have updates more regularly. No teams have cancelled. Any questions, call director Pat McDonell at (949) 366-0030, ext 33, email patm@wonews or to ask about your entry, call Denise at the same number, extension 25. Denisec@wonews…… again, the Facebook page will have updates.
