UNIOSUN Workers protest management threat to implement no work, no pay policy Staff of the Osun State University, Osogbo today protested against the threat by the management of the university to implement no work, no pay policy on its workers who are currently on strike. The workers under the aegis Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) in the six campuses of the institution had on last Wednesday embarked on an indefinite strike over the non-payment of their allowances among other entitlements. A statement signed by the registrar of the university, Dr. J. Faniran, said adequate notice was not given before the unions embarked on the strike. Addressing the workers at the Osogbo campus, the NASU Chairman, Comrade Isaiah Fayemi disclosed that after they have given the management the required notice of strike, the indefinite strike embarked upon is not only legal but also legitimate thus describing the management’s threat not to pay members of staff their salary as laughable. “It is unfortunate that the management, rather than seeking ways to accede to the demands of unions, is threatening not to pay members of staff their legitimate salary because of a legitimate industrial action they are participating in. “UNIOSUN is the only institution in the whole southwest that is not enjoying the hazard allowance. LASU, EKSU, TASUED and even LAUTECH that is co-owned by Osun and Oyo states government is being faithful to this hazard allowance”. Fayemi said. Comrade Fayemi and his NAAT counterpart, Comrade Adeleke Ismaheel however declared that they are not calling off the strike until the management meets their demands. The workers are demanding for the implementation of the hazard allowance, arrears, overtime allowance and stoppage of special allowances for some selected staff would be implemented to the letter before they would call off the strike. According to the workers, “the management should henceforth stop the implementation of the new killing tax regime and reverse to the old tax as obtained in other universities”. “The management should pay without further delay the 1% pioneer allowance arrears, pay staff salary promptly and also implement the welfare package for staff which includes car refurbish, furniture and housing loan as obtained in other universities and government parastatals”.
