UPDATE (9): Typhoon condition 1 for Saipan, Tinian and Rota (Homeland Security and Emergency Management/Office of the Governor) — At 4 p.m. Sunday, the eye of typhoon Vongfong was located at about 215 miles southeast of Saipan and Tinian, and 210 miles east-southeast of Rota. Vongfong is moving west-northwest at 21 mph, and the forecast track will bring it through the southern Mariana Islands (Rota and Guam) early Monday morning. Maximum sustained winds remain 80 mph, and Vongfong is expected to continue to intensify to a major typhoon within the next 24 to 36 hours. Typhoon force winds extend outward up to 30 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 100 miles from the center. Because of the anticipated threat, Gov. Eloy S. Inos upgraded typhoon condition 2 to typhoon condition 1 for Saipan, Tinian and Rota as of 6 p.m. Sunday evening. Typhoon condition 1 means that the typhoon is 12 hours away or is on location. Residents of Saipan, Tinian and Rota should take necessary precautionary measures and prepare for strong wings, heavy rains showers and possible flooding in low lying areas. The public should also continue to monitor the official bulletins which will be available through local media sources and NOAA weather radio broadcast on 162.5 megahertz.
