UPND Officials Nearly Cause Confusion as Early Results Show Lungu - TopicsExpress

UPND Officials Nearly Cause Confusion as Early Results Show Lungu Leading Confusion at Mulungushi International Conference Centre, the national results center, almost erupted as some opposition political party representatives demanded to know why the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) was not announcing the results. By 03:40, the ECZ had not made any official announcement regarding the results for the presidential by-election which angered the opposition political party representatives. But ECZ Public Relations Manager Chris Akufuna pleaded with the party representatives to remain calm saying the commission was still verifying the results they had received. UPND officials were riled that majority of results emerging were from the Copperbelt where the party president had resoundingly been rejected. They demanded that the results from Southern Province where Patriotic Front president Edgar Lungu was trailing Hakainde Hichilema should also be squeezed through to the public. Meanwhile Lungu has taken an early lead with a few votes from constituencies announced by the ECZ at the national results center so far. On the Copperbelt, Lungu got 10, 629 votes from Chililabombwe Constituency while the UPND Leader Hakainde Hichilema got 3, 047 votes representing 74.94 percent and 21.48 percent respectively. Lungu got 3, 714 votes in Mambilima Constituency in Luapula Province followed by his closest rival Hakainde Hichilema of UPND obtaining 568 votes. And in Mwense Constituency in the same province, Mr. Lungu obtained 5, 340 votes followed by Mr. Hichilema who had 1, 055 votes. In Eastern Province in Feira Constituency, Lungu polled 3, 332 votes followed by his usual rival Hakainde Hichilema who had 751 votes. The rest of the presidential candidates got less that 120 votes in all the the constituencies announced by ECZ so far. Early indication still show that the PF has set the tone for what could be a long wait in the election results wait with the ruling party taking three of the already confirmed results. The PF has taken Luangwa where they have polled 3, 332 with their closest rivals the UPND getting 751 votes. In Mambilima the PF’s Edgar Lungu has polled 3, 400 with UPND getting 568 votes while in Feira the PF got 3, 032 with the UPND getting 751 votes. However, it is a long way before a clearer picture emerges to the time final results are announced. And the ECZ has asked for patience in the delivering of final results at the centre. ECZ public relations officer Chris Akufuna said that the ECZ will not release results until the whole package from the constituencies had been received and also insisted that they will only receive verified results. The ECZ is expected to release the first package of confirmed results at 10:00 hours.
