Up a Tree, Literally by Jerry Milam I went out into mothers yard last week Where I bagan to climb in her pecan tree. Without a ladder, it was not an easy thing for me, Cause I have been diagnose with COPD. I had forgotten how grand that this could be, To climb as high as you can and see as far as you can see. Mother came out, whatare you doing in that tree? she asked. I was shooing the crows away from her tree was my task. Well at 60 years old that is not a safe place to be. And even through the splendor, I had to agree. I recalled an incident when I was in the 1st grade, My memory is not so good and has begaun to fade. A friend of mine had broken an arm from falling from a tree. Now, at the time, that seemed kind of silly to me. But that summer, my brother and I were having a Chinaberry fight, He in his tree, me in mine; all in fun and not for spite. The only berries left in my tree were on a dead limb, This aint very fair, I yelled out to him. So I went out on that limb to grab the berries that I lacked, I was brought back to reality when that old limb cracked. I put my hands behind my back as I fell from that tree, No,sir. There will not be a broken arm for me. I hit the ground so hard that it made a loud thud, I was wishing that the ground was made of mud. It knocked the wind out of me, but no broken arm. It gave me a good scare, but there was no harm. A few minutes later I returned to climb that tree, And I thought to myself, what a wonderful place to be.
