Working with public schools, FOCUS has identified families who are in need of these items to help their children stay in school and receive the education they need. Each fall, many families throughout the country often struggle to get their children ready for school. Almost all of these families find it difficult to afford new shoes, but shoes are an essential item, protecting children’s feet from cuts and infections and allowing them to play on the playground and participate in physical education activities. Through our partnership with a major American shoe company, FOCUS will distribute new, high-quality athletic shoes to hundreds of thousands of children in 28 cities across the United States. To help us with this program, we are looking for leaders and volunteers in your area to help us distribute 40,000 shoes. With your help, we would like to recruit a team of 20 volunteers to mobilize the Orthodox faithful in your parish and share the love of Christ through the simple action of giving shoes to economically disadvantaged children. The FOCUS Operation: Lace Up program will distribute shoes twice in 2013, both at the start of the school semester in July/August and then again at the start of the winter semester, in November/December. In order to facilitate giving shoes to children, FOCUS has already signed agreements with public schools in your area. The primary role of the FOCUS volunteer team will be to receive, sort and distribute shoes to the schools. It is our hope and prayer that this program will make life easier for these children and their families in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, and serve as a strong public witness to the social action outreach of the Orthodox Church. This program will unite communities, schools, and Orthodox parishes -- and serve to empower these children, providing them with seemingly simple items, but items that will assist them on the path to continued success in school and life. Your efforts are needed to help us lead this program in your area. Whether it is mobilizing others to participate, organizing a fundraiser, or helping us work with schools, you will have a hand in delivering shoes to children in need and creating better opportunities for them. Your participation is a fundamental part of serving these children in your community.
