Van Gaals wishlist : 10. Ezequiel Garay - He is fast, strong and aerially powerful. Enough reasons to be considered as a genuine centre back. He has proved himself at Benfica and with the exit of Ferdinand and Vidic, United are looking for a similar replacement and Garay very much fits the bill. 9. Mat Hummels -A defender who has a rare attacking abilty which is what makes him so special. He is on the list of Van Gaal’s possible transfer targets and will be a great asset to the team. Holds the backline like a fortress and has brilliant leadership skills which is the need of the hour at United after the departure of senior members from the team. 8.Luke Shaw -A highly rated teenager who could go on to become one of the greatest left backs ever, United have already bid £27 million for this Southampton player only to be turned down. But there is high possibility that United will launch another improved bid and sign this player under any possible circumstances. 7. Alexis Sanchez -The Chilean is a highly rated attacker and the lack of first team playing time at Barcelona could mean that he could be on his way out from the club. Pace and creativity are two things that is needed in the United midfield and wide areas which is why Sanchez could be considered on a serious basis. 6.Toni Kroos -It will take a lot of money and convincing to bring someone like Toni Kroos to United. He will have to sacrifice Champions league football and having won three trophies at Bayern this season this looks less of a possibility but is still very much on the cards for United. 5. Marco Reus -Another big money transfer and looks difficult on paper as well. Reus has settled well at Dortmund but regular exist of top players from the club will put doubts in his mind. United could lure him to Old Trafford by offering a huge pay hike along with a good transfer amount plus out of favor midfielder Shinji Kagawa in a swap deal. 4. Cesc Fabregas - United did bid for Fabregas last season as well but under a highly experienced manager like Van Gaal, Fabregas now looks like a realistic target who has raised some issues playing for Barcelona where he has not been received well. The idea of playing with fellow countryman Juan Mata and former teammate Van Persie might be interesting for Fabregas. 3. Arjen Robben - Van Gaal will be taking over United once his world cup campaign with Netherlands ends this July. He would be keenly interested in bringing some of the star names from his world cup squad to the United team. With Van Persie and Alexander Buttner already available at his disposal, Robben might consider playing with United who are looking for a high quality winger. 2. Kevin Strootman - If Van Persie is #1 for Van Gaal then Strootman is his second in command. United need an ideal midfielder who can fall back and defend and assist the forwards as well. The aging legs of Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher have lost pace. Strootman can be a great midfielder and draws close comparison with United legend Roy Keane. 1. Ivan Rakitic - Touted as the Paul Scholes replacement, Rakitic is someone who can control the game with his deft passes and create endless chances for forwards. He has a 33 million release clause and bringing him from Sevilla where he just won the Europa league will be quite a task to complete for Van Gaal. - Mousse
