Via Koigi Wa Wamwere What Is The Trouble With Kenya? A Kiswahili - TopicsExpress

Via Koigi Wa Wamwere What Is The Trouble With Kenya? A Kiswahili proverb says: “Every era has its holy book.” Equally, each era has its mother problem. When Chinua Achebe asked: “What is the trouble with Nigeria?” he answered, “The trouble with Nigeria is simply and squarely failed leadership.” In regard to Kenya I will say, the trouble with Kenya has been different at different times. When Kenya was under British foreign rule, our mother problem was colonialism. After we got independence the trouble with Kenya was defined as three problems: “poverty, disease and ignorance.” Over time, the list of our problems grew longer: capitalism, greed, theft, corruption, negative ethnicity and dictatorship. Of all these problems the mother problem was one-party dictatorship. Consequently, second liberation was launched to fight one party dictatorship which was partly rooted out when multi-party democracy was restored and new constitution inaugurated. Unfortunately our problems have not abated. Even failed leadership continues to plague the country. So what is the trouble with Kenya today? Because we can only solve our problems with good leadership, anything which makes it difficult to remove failed or bad leaders that we must replace with good leadership is the trouble with Kenya. It is my humble submission that, the trouble with Kenya is the poverty and enslavement of the mind of ordinary Kenyans that hypnotizes majority voters into voting for and every five years, replacing bad leadership with worse leadership, leading to a perpetuation of problems which bad leaders can never solve. That is what I think. What do you?
