Village Coffee - product A better deal for png growers & their villages PNG coffee farmers currently receive around $1.20/kg to $1.30/kg, and yet coffee is commercially sold for between $25/kg and$60/kg to the public in Australia. Village Coffee believes the growers deserve a higher payment for their effort and risks. Village Coffee addresses this inequality in income that has been created by the powerful international businesses, to help the growers in stimulating the direction for their own future. This plan attempts to bring growers and the community out of poverty. The Village Coffee payment plan is as follows: Set price of $1.50/kg to the growers (parchment) paid by exporter. Additional $3.00/kg (bonus) to the growers after their coffee is roasted and sold. Additional $1.00/kg to the geographic community towards education and health, on a fund-matching basis for projects of significance to the community; Additional $2/kg for sponsored leadership training (through Tertiary Students Christian Fellowship workers at our universities). Total of approximately $7.5/kg excluding exporter’s cost which about $2.00-2.50/kg. A total of $10/kg against approximately $4.00/kg generally paid by Australian roasters currently. VILLAGE COFFEE! THE MOST FAIR, TRANSPARENT, RESCUER OF POVERTY Village Coffee aims to be fairer than any other importers, including ethical importers, in the market place, tackling the structural unfairness of trade in the world of coffee that leaves the growers poor, discouraged & hopeless. Village Coffee is about not just talk the talk but real accountable, transparent action to close the huge gap. Village Coffee is not about slogans and terminology but rather real action for the underpaid grower. There has already been plenty of do-good talk by others but we are about action, after knowing and experiencing first hand what is to be on the receiving end. Village Coffee recognises the growers’ effort in the total process from growing to cup of expresso is near to 90%, yet the return for this effort is a shamefully 2-4%. Village Coffee aims to increase that shameful percent to about 10% and work hard to increase that as more coffee lovers support this cause. Village Coffee needs your support to make this a reality. The more Village Coffee brand is sold, the costs per unit fall resulting in increase percent to the grower. Village Coffee will go the extra mile to satisfy your craving for the best brew with fresh, uplifting-your-spirit kind of coffee as you know in your heart of hearts you are supporting and saying “tenkyu” to a poor grower who made your life that little better.
