WELCOME TO THE 111th EDITION OF THE fd ZONE ! Curatorial note: Mani Kauls Siddheshwari finds a special place of in the history of Indian cinema. Having been described as avant-garde and poetic documentary, this film on the life of the renowned thumri singer Siddheshwari Devi, was awarded the National Award for the Best Documentary in 1989. Mani Kaul’s films have radically overhauled the relationship of image to form, of speech to narrative, with the objective of creating a ‘purely cinematic object’ that is above all visual and formal. - Ashish Rajadhyaksha. A film that amalgamates multiple timelines, geographies, and narrative modes, Siddheshwari brings together various art forms like literature, music and theatre. The soundtrack is a dense network of speech, whispers, vocal and instrumental music and recited poetry. The cinematography of this film was a first in terms of visual design and mise-en-scene. Siddheswari Devi is portrayed by a number of women, including some who enact her biography, some who depict her experiences and by the singer herself. For anyone who hasnt watched this film and everyone who has, here is a chance to watch it, in a theatre, with an audience and experience collectively the films multiple cinematic realities through its formal and sensorial flourishes.
