WERE NO. 1! Remember the uproar when the Enemies List kept by the Nixon White House was published -- the bitterness of people who had been left off? Welp, this Muscovites list of Russias Foreign Enemies has the United States at No. 1 -- not exactly a surprise (turn on your TV), but still gratifying in a reverse-snobbery kind of way. Hey, it wasnt easy beating out Ukraine, after all, what with the Fascist Junta You Love to Hate and everything. More seriously, the genuinely sad part of this mini-poll (and others showing the same) is less the sort of borderline-lethargic Two Minutes Hate responses (sticks and stones -- meh) than the respondents struggle to identify a country whos their...friend. Alas. I suspect that many people who come from outside this country share my sentiments: I love Russia, and no doubt always will. So its very, very dispiriting to see that how many Russians do not perceive this in others view of their country, and are apparently untroubled that a hostile isolationism has effectively been sold to them as the appropriate national mindset now -- even as they continue to rank high, taken as individuals, on a theoretical list of the most friendly and hospitable people in the world. Turn off your TVs, folks.
